About Us

DIBS Education is committed to providing relevant, practical and evidenced based education to those at the bedside. DIBS is an acronym for “Don’t Ignore the BasicS”. With the many challenges facing both medical and nursing staff, our education aims to teach the importance of “the Basics”. An understanding of normal physiology is essential when confronted with the rapidly deteriorating patient. Our goal is to assist the clinician to develop knowledge and assessment skills that will prove invaluable to those practicing in both metropolitan and rural areas.

Our workshops are offered to Enrolled Nurses, Registered Nurses, student Nurses, Student medical officers and Junior Medical Officers. They are interactive and lively, and a fun way to gather together and learn how we can improve our networking, our patient assessment, and ultimately the care we provide.

Liana Vandervelden

Liana is currently our main presenter. She comes with years of experience in both rural and city areas. Her rural experience has been in Balranald, Coonabarabran, Binnaway and Baradine. Larger centres include Prince of Wales / Prince Henry Hospitals, Dubbo Base, Mount Druitt and Maitland. For many years Liana’s role has extended to the co ordination of the Clinical Emergency Response System throughout Maitland hospital. Liana is particularly passionate about BSL and ALS knowledge and skills acquisition.

A big focus of Liana’s teaching is on early detection of the deteriorating patient, appropriate patient advocacy, and escalation of care.

She commenced nursing in 1980 and has a special interest in cardiac and emergency nursing. She has College of Nursing certificates in Advanced Generalist Nursing, and Coronary Care Nursing, Cert IV in Workplace Training and Assessment, and a Masters in Advanced Clinical Education from UNE.

How diverse and beautiful is Australia – DIBS Education would like to offer education to clinicians in  rural towns, and will consider accommodating very small numbers. Contact us for further information.
